Thesis title:           Experimental Study of Thermal Oxidation of Toluene and Natural Gas in Thermal Incinerator

Thesis abstract:

In This work the influence of several parameters in the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is considered. To this end, a half-industrial-scale pilot unit was con-structed. The length and diameter of the pilot are 130 cm and 12 cm accordingly. One of the useful characteristics of this incinerator is that there are 8 sample points to the length of 15 cm on the pilot that the gases can be sampled and pumped to a gas chromatograph analyzer. In this instrument the components of the combustion gasses were analyzed. The feed of this pilot was air for a flow rate of 4 m3/hr which contaminated by toluene with concentration of 1200~1400 ppm. The main reason for using toluene was its high AIT (auto ignition tempera-ture) and high stability against thermal destruction. For heating the incinerator a burner is in-stalled in the center of entrance of gases in the incinerator that is fed with natural gas. The burner provides the required temperature to burn the VOC components. In these experiments, the flow rate of NG was increased in four stages to 900 ˚C. In this case, the concentration of toluene in the exhaust of incinerator was less than 15 ppm and the destruction rate efficiency (DRE) of toluene was more than 99 %. Furthermore the concentrations of second contami-nants like CO and THC were reduced to less than 100 ppm. The experiments and fabrication of thermal oxidizer incinerator were performed in the reactor and catalyst center of Sahand University of technology.
