Seyed Jamal Hassani Rad

Jamal has been born on 29th December at Amol, a beautiful city of Mazandaran province in Iran. After his preliminary educations at this city, he entered Babol (Noshirvani) university of technology for academic studies of chemical engineering in 2004. He passed his B.Sc. program in this field and in the branch of Process design. His final project of B.Sc. was “Theorical studies on Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC)’’. He continued master of science degree at Sahand University of Technology in thermo-kinetic field in 2010. At the moment he is doing his M.Sc. thesis under supervision of Dr. Mohammad Haghighi, with a topic of "Evaluation of CeO2 and MgO Addition to Ni/Al2O3 Nanocatalyst Synthesized via Sol-Gel and Impregnation Methods and Comparison of their Performance in Dry Reforming of Methane".

Thesis abstract:

The gowing use of natural gas and reduce fossil resources in the world represents a big change in how we use these resources in the coming years. Accessibily and cheapness makes natural gas suitable resource of energy. Due to high consumption of syngas in industries, there is a need for new methods for its affordable and large scale production. At present, steam reforming of natural gas is widely used in industries to produce syngas. The disadvantages of the steam reforming process are the high rate of energy consumption and low conversion of methane. In the new methods, efforts have been done to provide syngas by dry reforming process. The most serious problem in dry reforming of methane is deactivation and destruction of Ni/Al2O3 catalyst. In this regard, numerous strategies such as addition of promoters into the catalyst formulation and use of new preparation methods have been examined aiming to enhance the performance of the catalyst. For achievement of suitable catalyst for dry reforming of methane, this research was planned in 3 sections at Reactor and Catalysis Research Center of Sahand University of Technology. At first, Ni/Al2O3-CeO2 and Ni/Al2O3-MgO nanocatalysts have been synthesized via impregnation and sol-gel methods for studding the influence of synthesis method on catalyst performance in dry reforming of methane.

 Seyed Jamal Hassani Rad

The results obtained from XRD, FESEM, EDX, BET, FTIR and TG analysis showed the promoter and preparation method have a geat influence on the physicochemical properties of catalyst. Using sol-gel method, high homogeneity and narrow size distribution in nanocatalysts particles can be seen, in a way that approximately 100 percent of particles were lower than 100 nm. Consequently, activity tests showed that sol-gel synthesized samples had better performance in comparison to impregnation synthesized one. Furthermore, compared with the Ni/Al2O3-MgO catalyst, CeO2-doped catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity. Doping of CeO2 as a promoter on Ni/Al2O3 was found to improve dry reforming activity for H2 and CO productions.
