Nazli Asgari

She was born in Iran in 1984. She graduated in B.Sc of chemical engineering from Sahand University of Technology in 2006 working on "Synthesis of Zirconia Nanopowders by Acrylamide Gel Method". Then she accepted in the same university as M.Sc student in 2007. Now she is working at the "Reactor and Catalysis Research center" on her M.Sc thesis under supervision of Dr.Shafiei and Dr.Haghighi with a topic of "Process Design of Xylene Removal from Industrial Gases by Oxidation and Investigation of Effective Parameters".

Thesis title:           Process Design of Xylene Removal from Industrial Gases by Oxidation and Investigation of Effective Parameters
Supervisors:
Dr. Sirous Shafiei, Dr. Mohammad Haghighi
Co-Supervisor:
Nader Rahemi
Thesis abstract:

The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are known as harmful air pollutants because of their toxic, malodorous and carcinogenic nature and relatively high vapor pressure. Xylenes are one of the important groups of VOCs and their treatment needs to be analyzed and addressed. In this way, catalytic oxidation which is a rather mature technology has been chosen for removal of xylene because of its advantages. It should be noted that treatment processes of xylenes are accompanied by several vague problems and detailed chemical models are mainly restricted to benzene or toluene. The development of well-validated kinetic models via the experimental and theoretical studies makes it possible to predict the formation of characteristic products, paraphrase the behavior of different isomers of xylene due to the difference in their reactivity, propose the main reaction path that leads to oxidation and create a database that industries could use when designing efficient, cleaner and safer processes. To have the optimized and applicable process the reliability of the model should be investigated and the information elicited from laboratory studies should be gathered for improving the performance of the existing reactor. Also different parameters of controlling the oxidation of xylene to intermediate oxidation products should be studied.
